How it Started
In painting an acorn,
I challenged God with four prayers. This acorn has become a tree.
What’s it all about?
Prayer is an invitation for God to engage actively in our lives. But sometimes we struggle to see Him at work.
Roughly five years ago, I found myself at a standstill in my prayer life. I believed that prayer was important and often lifted situations and loved ones before our God, but when the going got tough I would forget the many times God had answered my prayers in the past. And often I would forget to thank Him for all those answered prayers.
When sharing my frustrations with my pastor, he challenged me to think outside the box. And thus began my prayer tree painting. The concept is simple, but represents answered prayer visually as a constant reminder that God is on the move.
Understanding that each one of us is unique, feel free to customize this concept for yourself.
In brief, this is how it works for me. I am an artist and my favourite medium is oil painting. As I bring requests to the Lord in prayer, I keep tags behind my paintings representing each prayer. When that prayer is answered, I paint a leaf on my tree and gold-leaf it. Every time I walk by this painting in my house it is a witness to God working in my life and those I pray for. The tags help me to not forget a promise of prayer. And it allows me to remember to keep in contact with people to follow up with them and encourage them.
If you would like to try it for yourself, we have designed a “business card” for you to start with. On the front is a sapling with four leaves. On the back, there is a space for you to write your prayers down. As God answers theses prayers, colour them in. They also make a great conversation starter if you wish to spark the journey in another person’s life.

Where Next?
The story of the prayer tree painting was featured in the April 2020 Messenger Magazine. We are also hoping to build out some things in the future, but we could use a hand. We still want to create a short video to share in social media and we have a dream to create a Prayer Tree app for mobile devices. We are seeing God move in the lives of friends, loved ones and new acquaintances. What started as an acorn has not only resulted in a tree with many answered prayers. It has also grown into a forest of more trees as others took up the challenge and created their own prayer projects ranging from button trees to quilted leaves.
